Jibanananda Das is an Indian poet, writer, novelist, and essayist. Often referred to as “Rupashi Banglar Kabi, Das is the most widely read poet after Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam in Bangladesh and West Bengal. Although initially not specifically recognized, Das is today recognized as one of the greatest poets of the Bengali language. Born in Barisal to a Vaidya-Brahmo family, Das studied English Literature at Presidency College in Kolkata and received an MA from Calcutta University. He has had a difficult career and endured financial hardship his entire life. He taught at many colleges but never got a bachelor's degree. He settled in Kolkata after the division of India. Das died on October 22, 1954, eight days after being struck by a streetcar. Witnesses said that despite the whistle from the tram, he did not stop and was hit. Some saw the accident as a suicide attempt.

Bengali poet who was posthumously acknowledged as the most important poet of India's post-Tagore period. Banalata Sen and Rupasi Bangla are two of his main poetry collections; he also authored a number of short tales, novels, and nonfiction works.
