Sir John Gray Gorton was Australia's nineteenth Prime Minister, in office from 1968 to 1971. He led the Liberal Party during this period, serving for a long time as government minister. Gorton was born out of wedlock and had an eventful childhood. He attended Brasenose College, Oxford, after graduating from high school at Geelong Grammar School, then returned to Australia to take over his father's estate in northern Victoria. Gorton joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1940 and served as a fighter pilot in Malaysia and New Guinea during World War II. He suffered serious facial injuries during the 1942 landing on Bintan Island, and during the evacuation, his ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. He returned to farming after being released in 1944 and elected to the Kerang Shire Council in 1946; he later served a term as district president

From 1968 to 1971, he served as Australia's 19th Prime Minister as a politician and senator. His term was tumultuous, and he had a tumultuous relationship with the press, who frequently characterized him as an inept women man.
