Alice Cogswell inspired Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet to found the American School for the Deaf in Hartford, Connecticut. At the age of two, Alice suffered from "spot fever". The disease took away her hearing and later lost the ability to speak. At that time, deafness was considered the equivalent of mental illness, and it was believed that deaf people could not learn. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet moved into her home when she was 9 years old. He quickly realized that she was not interacting with other children, and when he asked why, he was told that she was deaf. Intrigued, he decided to teach her to communicate through pictures and writing in the mud. He and Alice's father, Dr. Mason Cogswell decided that an official school would be best for her, but no such school existed in the United States. Gallaudet traveled in Europe for 15 months, with Laurent Clerc on his return.
