Born in Tepetitán, in the city of Macuspana, in the state of Tabasco, in the southeastern United States, López Obrador graduated from the National Autonomous College of Mexico in 1986 after a period of interruption of studies to participate in politics. He obtained a degree in political science. He began his political career in 1976 as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party in Tabasco. His first public post was director of the Tabasco Indigenous Institute in 1977, where he promoted book publishing in Indigenous languages ​​and the Chontal Ridge Project. In 1989 he joined the Democratic Revolutionary Party and was its candidate in 1994 for governor of Tabasco. He was the national leader of the PRD from 1996 to 1999.
