Antoine Lavoisier
Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier, also Antoine Lavoisier after the French Revolution, was a French aristocrat and chemist, who played a central role in the chemical revolution of the 18th century and was a major influence on both chemical history and biological history. In popular literature, he is considered the "father of modern chemistry". It is generally accepted that Lavoisier's great achievements in chemistry stem in large part from his evolution from the science of qualitative to quantitative. Lavoisier is the most noted for discovering the role of oxygen in combustion. He recognized and named oxygen and hydrogen, and opposed the theory of phlogiston. Lavoisier helped build the data system, wrote the first complete list of items, and helped reform chemical nomenclature. He predicted the existence of silicon and discovered that although matter can change shape or form, its mass was always the same.
