In 1956, he became the first person to receive the NBA Most Valuable Player award, and he won it again in 1959. He has also won the NBA All-Star Game MVP 4 times. The first NBA player to score more than 20,000 points, Pettit was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970 .
