Gillian Howard Welch is an American singer and songwriter. She performed with her musical partner, guitarist David Rawlings. Their sparse and dark musical style, combining elements of Appalachian, bluegrass, country and Americana music, described by The New Yorker as "both creative and obliviously reminiscent of rural forms. in the past." Welch and Rawlings have collaborated on 7 critically acclaimed albums, 5 with his name and two with Dave Rawlings Machine. Her 1996 debut, Revival, and 2001 release Time, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Their 2003 album, Soul Journey, introduced electric guitars, drums and a more upbeat sound to their work. After an eight-year hiatus, she released her fifth studio album, The Harrow & The Harvest, in 2011, which was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
