Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is an American poet and educator with works including "The Trip of Paul Revere", Song by Hiawatha and Evangeline. He was the first American to translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Songs and was one of New England's Fireside poets. Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine, then still part of Massachusetts. He studied at Bowdoin College and became a professor at Bowdoin University and then Harvard University after his time in Europe. His first major poetry collections were The Voice of the Night and Ballads and other poems. He retired in 1854 to focus on writing, and spent the rest of his life at George Washington's Revolutionary War headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His first wife, Mary Potter, died in 1835 after a miscarriage. His second wife, Frances Appleton, died in 1861 after being burned when her dress caught fire.
