Isaac Babbitt
Isaac Babbitt is an American inventor. In 1839, he invented a metal alloy bearing made of low-friction tin, Babbitt metal, which is widely used in engine bearings today. Babbitt is a professional silversmith who experimented with metal alloys. In 1824, he made the first Britannia metal produced in the United States, from which he sold the tableware under the Babbitt, Crossman & Company names. Due to financial failure, he retired and in 1834 moved to Boston. There, he enlisted as a director of the Boston South Iron Company, better known as the Algiers Foundries, where he produced the first copper cannon export in the United States. At the same time, in 1839, he invented a widely used antifriction metal known today as the Babbitt metal. For this invention, he received the gold medal from the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanical Association in 1841, after which the US Congress awarded him $ 20,000. He later patented the material in the UK and Russia.
