John Cornforth
Sir John Warcup Cornforth Jr., AC, CBE, FRS, FAA is an Australian British chemist who won the 1975 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the stereochemistry of reactions catalyzed by enzymes, becomes the only Nobel laureate to be born in New South Wales. Cornforth studied the enzymes that catalyze the change of organic compounds, the substrate, by replacing the hydrogen atoms in the chain and cycle of the substrate. In the synthesis and structural descriptions of various terpenes, olefins and steroids, Cornforth specifically identified the groups of matrix hydrogen atoms that have been replaced by an enzyme to induce certain changes in a substrate, allowing him to detail the cholesterol biosynthesis. . For this work he won part of the 1975 Chemistry Prize, along with co-recipient Vladimir Prelog, and was knighted in 1977 .
