Martin Joseph O'Malley is an American politician and lawyer, who served as the 61st governor of Maryland from 2007 to 2015. As a member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007, and was a councilor of the The third. County Council in the city's northeast region in Baltimore City Council from 1991 to 1999. O'Malley was elected mayor of Baltimore in 1999 after a surprise victory in the city's primary election. As mayor, O'Malley made a priority of reducing crime in the city. He was re-elected in 2004. O'Malley won the 2006 presidential election, beating incumbent Republican Governor Bob Ehrlich. During his first term, O'Malley served as the Maryland StateStat and became the first governor to sign the Nationally Popular Interstate Treaty of Confederation. O'Malley was re-elected in 2010. In 2011, he signed a law requiring illegal immigrants to be brought to the United States as eligible children for state college tuition.
