The Wright brothers - Orville and Wilbur - are two American aviation pioneers often credited with inventing, building, and piloting the world's first successful engine-powered aircraft. They made the first controlled and sustained flight of a heavier-than-air powered aircraft with the Wright Flyer on December 17, 1903, 4 miles south of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The brothers were also the first to invent aircraft controls to be able to fly using fixed-wing engines. In 1904-1905, the Wright brothers developed their aircraft to perform longer, more aerodynamic flights with the Wright Flyer II, followed by the first truly realistic fixed-wing aircraft, the Wright Flyer III. The breakthrough of the brothers was that they created a three-axis control system, allowing the pilot to fly the plane efficiently and maintain balance. This method is still standard on fixed-wing aircraft.
