Paul Berg is an American biochemist and professor emeritus at Stanford University. He was awarded the 1980 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, together with Walter Gilbert and Frederick Sanger. The award recognizes their contributions to basic nucleic acid research. Berg received an undergraduate degree from Penn State University, where he majored in biochemistry. He got his doctorate. in biochemistry at Case Western Reserve University in 1952. Berg is a professor in the Washington University School of Medicine and Stanford University School of Medicine, and director of the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine. In addition to the Nobel Prize, Berg received the National Science Medal in 1983 and the National Medal of Medicine in 1986. Berg is a member of the Sponsoring Council of the Atomic Scientists Newsletter.
