Raymond Reardon, a retired Welsh professional snooker who dominated the sport in the 1970s, has won six world championships. He was world champion in 1970, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1978, and finished second at the 1982 world championship. He won the first Pot Black tournament in 1969. Reardon was the first dominant snooker force in the modern era and the first player to rank number one, when the world rankings were introduced in the 1976–77 season, holding number one for five years. His dominance in the 1970s shaped the dominance of Steve Davis in the 1980s and Stephen Hendry in the 1990s. He regained number one in 1982, but his form declined. After that, he was eliminated from the top 16 players in the 1986-1987 season. . He retired from his playing career in 1991. Reardon remains one of the best snookers in his fifties, setting many records that still stand.
