Simmons previously served as the 18th President of Brown University from 2001-2012, where she served as the first African-American President of an Ivy League organization. Prior to Brown, she headed Smith College, one of the Seven Sisters and the largest university for women in the United States, from 1995. On December 4, 2017, she was officially appointed Principal, Eighth at Prairie View A&M University.
