Thomas Merton is an American Trappist monk, writer, theologian, mystic, poet, social activist, and comparative religious expert. On May 26, 1949, he was ordained a priest and received the name "Father Louis". He was a member of the Convent of Our Lady of Gethsemane, near Bardstown, Kentucky, who lived there from 1941 until his death. Merton wrote over 50 books over a 27-year period, primarily on spirituality, social justice, and quiet pacifism, as well as dozens of essays and reviews. Among Merton's earliest works is his successful autobiography The Seven Storey Mountain. His account of his spiritual journey inspired many WWII veterans, students, and teens to explore the offerings of monasteries across America. It is among the 100 best non-fiction books of the century by the National Review. Merton became an interested supporter of interfaith understanding, discovering Eastern religions through his study of mystical practices.
