Thomas P. Stafford
Thomas Patten Stafford is a former US Air Force officer, test pilot and NASA astronaut, and one of 24 people who flew to the moon. He was also chief of the Bureau of Astronauts from 1969 to 1971. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy, Stafford joined the United States Air Force, piloting the F-86 Saber before becoming pilot. He was selected as an astronaut in 1962 and flew aboard the Gemini 6A and Gemini 9. In 1969, Stafford was the commander of Apollo 10, the second manned mission to orbit the moon and the first to fly a lunar module into lunar orbit, descending to an altitude of nine miles. In 1975, Stafford commanded the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project flight, the first joint space mission between the United States and the Soviet Union. Stafford was a brigadier general at the time of his mission, becoming the first general-level officer to fly in space, and the first member of his Naval Academy class to strike the first stars, second and third to an officer level.
