Thor Heyerdahl
Thor Heyerdahl is a Norwegian explorer and ethnographer with a background in zoology, botany and geography. Heyerdahl is famous for his Kon-Tiki Expedition in 1947, during which he traveled 8,000 km across the Pacific on an artisanal raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition is designed to prove that ancient people may have taken long sea trips, creating bonds between societies. This is linked to a diffuse cultural development model. Heyerdahl made other trips to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely divided ancient peoples, most notably the 1970 Ra II expedition, when he sailed from the west coast of Africa to Barbados in a reed boat out of papyrus. He was appointed as a government researcher in 1984. He died on April 18, 2002 in Colla Micheri, Liguria, Italy, while visiting close family members. The Norwegian government held a state funeral for him at the Oslo Cathedral on April 26, 2002
