Vasily Vasilyevich Smyslov is a Soviet and Russian chess grandmaster, who was the world chess champion from 1957 to 1958. He was a candidate for the eight-time world chess championship. Smyslov twice finished first place in the Soviet Championship, and his total of 17 medals won at the Chess Olympics is an all-time record. In five European team championships, Smyslov won ten gold medals. Smyslov is still active and successful in chess competitions long after age sixty. Although his eyesight was impaired, he regularly composed chess problems and research until his death in 2010. In addition to chess, he was also an accomplished baritone singer.
