Zachary Tristan Sunderland is a former American sailor who was the first person under the age of 18 to tour the world solo. Sunderland ended her voyage after February 13, a day at sea on July 16, 2009 at the age of 17. The previous record was held by Australian David Dicks, and surpassed by Briton Michael Perham on August 27, 2009. Sunderland is the youngest American to complete a lap, overtaking Brian Caldwell, who finished it in 1996 at the age of 20. However, Sunderland's record is not held by either the Guinness World Record or the internationally recognized Board of Sailing World Records. In 2010, one of Sunderland's younger sisters, Abby Sunderland, attempted to accomplish this feat. She was forced to stop her efforts after her boat was damaged in a storm in the Indian Ocean. In 2011, Sunderland and his father Laurence joined the 19th season of the Grande Course. They finished 6th out of 11 teams and were eliminated in Copenhagen, Denmark.
