Alfred Emanuel Smith was an American politician who served four terms as governor of New York and was a Democratic presidential candidate in 1928. Son of an Irish American mother and Civil War veteran father, Smith was raised on the Lower East Side. of Manhattan near the Brooklyn Bridge. He has lived in this neighborhood all his life.
