Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta is an Italian physicist and chemist and a pioneer in electricity and energy, recognized as the inventor of the electric cell and the discoverer of methane. He invented the voltaic pile in 1799 and reported the results of his experiments in 1800 in a two-part letter to the President of the Royal Society. With this invention, Volta demonstrated that electricity can be chemically generated and debunked the popular theory that electricity is produced only by living organisms. Volta's invention aroused a lot of scientific interest and led others to conduct similar experiments, which ultimately led to the development of the electrochemical field. Volta also attracted the admiration of Napoleon Bonaparte for his invention, and was invited to the French Institute to demonstrate his invention to its members.
