Augustus Tolton, baptized Augustine Tolton, was the first Catholic priest in the United States to be openly black when ordained in 1886. A former baptized slave and Catholic, Tolton formally studied in Rome. He was ordained there on Easter Sunday 1886 at St. John Lateran basilica. Assigned to the Diocese of Alton, Tolton served for the first time in his home parish in Quincy, Illinois. Later assigned to Chicago, Tolton directed the development and construction of St. Monica Catholic Church as a black "national parish church", completed in 1893 on Route 36 and Dearborn south of Chicago. . He was declared venerable by Pope Francis in June 2019
