Festus Claudius McKay was a Jamaican writer and poet and a central figure in the Harlem Renaissance. In 1919 McKay wrote "If We Must Die", one of his most famous works. He wrote five novels: Home to Harlem, a bestseller which won the Harmon Gold Award for Literature; Banjo; Banana background; Romance in Marseille; and in 1941, a manuscript titled Amiable With Big Teeth: A Novel of Love Affair between Communists and the Poor Black Sheep of Harlem, was not published until 2017. McKay is also the author of collections of poetry; a collection of short stories, Gingertown; two autobiographies, A Long Way from Home and My Green Hills of Jamaica; and non-fiction, such as a historical and social treatise called Harlem: Negro Metropolis. His 1922 book of poetry, Harlem Shadows, was one of the first to be published during the Harlem Renaissance. His selected poems were published post diatum, in 1953. McKay was fascinated by communism early in his life.
