At the beginning of his career as a director, he starred in the comedies Spanking the Monkey, Flirting with Disaster, Three Kings and I Heart Huckabees. He has recently gained critical acclaim with his biographical sports film The Fighter, the romantic comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook and the crime thriller American Hustle. All three films were commercially successful and critically acclaimed, earning Russell three Oscar nominations for Best Director, as well as a nomination for Best Adaptation Screenplay for Silver. Linings Playbook and a nomination for Original Screenplay for American Hustle. Russell received a seventh Golden Globe nomination for the semi-biographical comedy Joy.
