Dennis M. Walcott is Premier of the New York City Department of Education. He succeeded Cathie Black, who resigned in April 2011 after only three months of work. He was replaced as Prime Minister by Carmen Fariña. Although Walcott was not trained as a school administrator, he served nine years as the deputy mayor of education for New York City and a member of the New York Board of Education. He applied to the New York State Department of Education for a waiver under the leadership of Administrator David M. Steiner. Walcott is a former employee of the Amistad Day Care Center and has a Masters in Education. Prior to joining Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2002 as deputy mayor of education, he headed the New York branch of the Federation of Cities. In March 2016, Walcott was selected as President and CEO of Queens Library. and was criticized for overseeing the closure of the library's first branch despite increased funding.
