Deval Laurdine Patrick is an American politician, civil rights lawyer, author and businessman, who served as Massachusetts' 71st Governor from 2007 to 2015. He was first elected in 2006, succeeding Mitt Romney, who chose not to run for re-election to focus on his presidential campaign. He was re-elected in 2010. He was Massachusetts' first African-American governor. As a Democrat, Patrick served from 1994 to 1997 as Assistant Attorney General of the United States to the Civil Rights Division under President Bill Clinton. He briefly ran for US President in the 2020 US Presidential election. Raised largely by a single mother in south Chicago, Patrick won a scholarship to Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts, in the eighth grade. He later attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School, where he chaired the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau.
