Ella Leffland is an American novelist and short story writer. Appreciated by other writers, his novels exhibit a superb mastery of realistic fiction techniques; but Leffland uses his means to illuminate characters whose imaginative and often quirky life is high. The setting for most of her work is in northern California, where she grew up; She is perhaps best known for her semi-autobiographical novel The Rumors of Peace about a girl reaching adulthood during WWII. The passion for personal and social evil that Leffland explored in Rumors of Peace emerged strongly in his ambitious historical novel based on the life of Hermann Göring, Knights, Death and the Devil, published in 1990. Leffland was born and raised in Martinez, California. She attended San Jose State University. His "Last Courtesies" story, published in Harper's Magazine, won first place O. Henry Award in 1977
