Ismail Abdel Salam Ahmed Haniyeh is a senior political leader of Hamas and formerly one of the two disputed prime ministers of the Palestinian National Government. Haniyeh became prime minister after Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections. President Mahmoud Abbas removed Haniyeh from his office on June 14, 2007 during the height of the Fatah-Hamas conflict, but Haniyeh did not recognize the decree and continued to exercise acting prime minister in the Gaza Strip. In September 2016, reports indicated that Haniyeh would replace Khaled Meshaal as the head of Hamas' political office. He was elected as the political leader of Hamas on May 6, 2017 .
