Jonas Geirnaert studied animation at KASK in Ghent. In May 2004, he won the short film jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his short animation Flatlife. Of the copies he sent for selection, only the first minute had sound. That's because it's his graduation project, and it's still not finished on the last day for selection entries. While Flatlife has no political message, Jonas's previous film The All-American Alphabet clearly does. On stage in Cannes, Jonas had a message for all Americans: "Don't vote for Bush". Such statements were widespread at the time, but his political preference was to the left as he was an activist of the Belgian Workers' Party's Marxist Party. In the fall of 2005, Geirnaert directed the Neveneffecten TV comedy series for Canvas along with comedians Lieven Scheire, Koen De Poorter and Jelle De Beule.
