Gaylord Kent Conrad is a former American politician who served as a US Senator from North Dakota. He is a member of the Democratic-NPL Party of North Dakota, a branch of the Democratic Party in North Dakota. First elected to the Senate in 1986, he served as chairman or a senior member of the Senate Budget Committee for 12 years. On January 18, 2011, Conrad announced that he would retire from politics and would not run for re-election in 2012. He said in a statement that it was more important that "I spend my time and energy trying to focus on solving the country's budget problems rather than being distracted by another campaign." Democratic colleague Heidi Heitkamp was elected to replace him. Conrad is currently co-chair of the Center for Bipartisan Policy's Retirement Security and Personal Savings Committee. He is also a member of ReFormers Caucus of Issue One. In addition, he sits on the board of directors of the responsible Federal Budget Committee.
