Laura Dewey Lynn Bridgman is known as the first deaf-blind American child to achieve an exceptional level of education in the English language, more than 50 years before the famous Helen Keller. Bridgman became deaf and blind at the age of two after contracting scarlet fever. She was educated at the Perkins Institute for the Blind, where, under the guidance of Samuel Gridley Howe, she learned to read and communicate in Braille and the craft alphabet developed by Charles-Michel de l'Épée. Over the years, Bridgman rose to fame when Charles Dickens met her while touring America in 1842 and wrote about her accomplishments in his American Notes. However, her popularity was short-lived and she spent the rest of her life in relative obscurity, primarily at the Perkins Institute, where she spent her time sewing and reading in Braille.
