Lee de Forest is an American inventor, calling himself "the father of radio", and a pioneer in the development of film recording used for films. He has over 180 patents, but also has an eventful career - he brags about creating it, then lost four lucky chances. He has also been involved in a number of major patent lawsuits, spends a significant portion of his income on legal bills and has even been tried for mail fraud. His most famous invention, in 1906, was the "Audion" three-element vacuum tube, the first practical amplification device. Although De Forest has only a limited understanding of how it works, it is the cornerstone of the electronics sector, making broadcasting, long distance phone lines and voice film possible, among countless other applications.
