Joseph Lockard "Lock" Martin Jr is an American actor famous for his role as the robot Gort in The Day the Earth Stood Still. He's from Pennsylvania and had a bunch of odd jobs before going into theaters. He directs traffic at Bob's Big Boy restaurant in Van Nuys, California in 1951. He worked as a porter at Grauman's Chinese Theater when he was hired for the role of Gort, although it was not his first acting job. According to reports, he was 7 feet 7 inches tall; however Robert Wise, director of The Day The Earth Stood Still, states that his height is 7 feet 1 inch in the DVD comments. His incredible size does not translate into strength and he has a hard time managing his robotic suit. For the scenes where he's supposed to physically lift Patricia Neal and Michael Rennie, they are either held on strings, a hidden wagon dog, or replaced by a lightweight dummy. He was also featured in The Incredible Shrinking Man as a giant, but his scenes have been deleted.
