Mark Peter Begich is an American politician who served as United States Senator from Alaska from 2009 to 2015. As a Democrat, he previously served as Mayor of Anchorage from 2003 to 2009. Born in Anchorage, Begich is the son of former US Representative Nick Begich Sr. He was elected to the Anchorage Parliament at the age of 26. To that end, he held the presidency for three years, before resigning in 1998. Begich ran two unsuccessful campaigns for Anchorage's mayor in 1994 and 2000 before being elected in 2003. Later then he was re-elected in 2006. In the 2008 Senate elections, Begich nearly defeated Ted Stevens, then a Republican in the US Senate for the longest time. In the 2014 Senate elections, Begich was nearly defeated in former Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan's re-election attempt. At the end of his tenure in the US Senate, Begich founded the consulting firm Northern Compass Group, based in Anchorage.
