Mary Ellen Mark is an American photographer known for photojournalism, documentaries, portraiture and promotional photography. She takes pictures of people "who pull away from mainstream society and look at the most interesting and often troubled things." Mark has published 18 collections of his works, including Streetwise and Ward 81. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world and is widely published on Life, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, New York Times and Vanity Fair. She was a member of Magnum Photos from 1977 to 1981. She has received numerous awards, including three Robert F. Kennedy Press Awards, three National Endowment for the Arts scholarships, Lifetime Achievement Award in George Eastman House's 2014 field of photography and Photography Awards for Outstanding Contribution of the World Photography Organization.
