Owen Frederick Bieber is an American labor activist. He was president of United Auto worker from 1983 to 1995. Born in Michigan, Bieber joined McInerney Spring and Wire Company, an auto parts supplier in Grand Rapids, after graduating from high school. His father was also employed in the company and co-founded a local UAW there. Bieber himself was active locally, moving from a store manager to its president between 1949 and 1956. In 1961, he became a union organizer part time. to the UAW international union and assumed the position of local president a year later working full time. time for UAW international. In 1980, he was elected head of the General Motors division of the UAW. After a fierce election in 1983, he was selected as the head of the union in October of that same year.
