Elie Wiesel is a Romanian American writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Prize winner and Holocaust survivor. He is the author of 57 books, written mainly in French and English, including Night, a book based on his experience as a Jewish prisoner in the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Buchenwald. He is professor of humanities at Boston University, where the Elie Wiesel Center for Jewish Studies was established in his honor. He participated in the Jewish cause and human rights activities and helped establish the American Massacre Memorial Museum in Washington, DC During his political activities, he also advocated for victims of oppression in places like South Africa, Nicaragua, Kosovo and Sudan. He publicly condemned the Armenian genocide of 1915 and remained a staunch defender of human rights throughout his life. He has been described by the Los Angeles Times as "America's Most Important Jew." Wiesel was awarded the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize .
