Qasem Soleimani is an Iranian military officer who served in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. From 1998 until his death in 2020, he served as commander of the Quds Force, a division of the IRGC with primary responsibility for extraterritorial and covert military operations. During his later years, he was regarded by some analysts as the right hand man of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as Iran's second-most powerful man after him. As a civilian, Soleimani first worked in construction before joining the IRGC during the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
