Ralph David Abernathy Sr. is an American civil rights activist and Baptist minister. He was ordained in the Baptist tradition in 1948. As a leader of the civil rights movement he was a close friend and advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. He worked with King to form the Montgomery Innovation Association, which led to a Montgomery bus boycott. He is also a co-founder and executive member of the Southern Catholic Leadership Conference. He became chairman of the SCLC after King's assassination in 1968, where he led the campaign for the poor in Washington, DC, among other protests and protests for disenfranchised Americans. He was also a member of the National Assembly's advisory committee on racial equality. In 1971, Abernathy addressed the United Nations about world peace. He also helped negotiate a deal between the FBI and Indian protesters during the 1973 injured knees incident.
