Richard Hamming
Richard Wesley Hamming was an American mathematician who had many influences in computer engineering and telecommunications. His contributions include the Hamming code, the Hamming window, the Hamming number, spherical encapsulation and the Hamming distance. Born in Chicago, Hamming attended the University of Chicago, the University of Nebraska and the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, where he wrote a doctoral thesis in mathematics under the supervision of Waldemar Trjitzinsky. In April 1945, he joined the Manhattan Project at the Los Alamos Laboratory, where he programmed IBM calculators to calculate solutions to the equations provided by the project physicists. He left the Bell Telephone Laboratory in 1946. Over the next fifteen years he was involved in almost all of the Laboratory's most remarkable achievements. For his work he was awarded the Turing Prize in 1968, being the recipient of the Third Prize.
