Robert Towne is an American screenwriter, producer, director and actor. He's part of the wave of New Hollywood movies. He is best known for his Oscar-winning original script for Chinatown by Roman Polanski, widely regarded by many as one of the best ever written. Then, he said he was inspired by a chapter in The Country of Southern California: An Island on Earth by Carey McWilliams and an article in the West Magazine about Los Angeles by Raymond Chandler. Towne also wrote a sequel, The Two Jakes; comedy - drama Hal Ashby The Last Detail and Shampoo; and the first two films of Mission: Impossible. Towne has directed the sports dramas Personal Best and Without Limits, the crime thriller Tequila Sunrise and the romantic crime thriller Ask the Dust.
