He owned the Detroit Tigers for five seasons after his father, industrialist Walter Briggs Sr., died in 1952. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Briggs was educated at Canterbury School and graduated from University. of Georgetown in 1934. He joined his family business, Briggs Manufacturing Company, and interrupted his commercial career to serve as lieutenant in the United States Air Force during World War II. He also became the vice president of the Tigers before the war.
