William Lewis Herndon
Commander William Lewis Herndon is one of the United States Navy's most notable explorers and sailors. In 1851, he led an American expedition to the Amazon Valley and prepared a report published in 1854 and widely circulated under the title Exploring the Amazon Valley. He is particularly noted for saving 152 women and children while commanding a Central American commercial steamboat in September 1857. During a three-day storm off North Carolina, the ship was towed by power-off. Herndon made arrangements to safely get women and children off the train to another ship. With no way to save the ship, Herndon opted to stay with more than 400 passengers and his crew drowned when the ship sank off Cape Hatteras on September 12.
