Thijs van Leer è un musicista, cantante, cantautore, compositore e produttore olandese noto soprattutto come membro fondatore del gruppo rock Focus come cantante, tastierista e flautista. Nato e cresciuto ad Amsterdam da una famiglia di musicisti, van Leer ha studiato pianoforte e flauto da bambino e li ha seguiti nelle università e nelle accademie musicali. Dal 1967 al 1969, van Leer si è esibito in uno spettacolo di varietà teatrale diretto da Ramses Shaffy come cantante e musicista di supporto, registrando singoli come artista solista e producendo, arrangiando e dirigendo musica per Bojoura. Ha fondato il Trio Thijs van Leer, una rock band di tre elementi che si è evoluta in Focus alla fine del 1969 dopo l'aggiunta del chitarrista Jan Akkerman.
