Sir Alfred Jules "Freddie" Ayer, commonly known as A. J. Ayer, is an English philosopher famous for promoting logical positivism, especially in the books Language, Truth and Logic and The Problem of Knowledge. He was educated at Eton College and Oxford University, after which he studied The Philosophy of Logical positivism at the University of Vienna. From 1933 to 1940, he taught philosophy at Christ Church, Oxford. During World War II, Ayer was the special operations director and agent of MI6. He was Grote Professor of Philosophy of Mind and Logic at University College London from 1946 to 1959, then he returned to Oxford to become Professor of Logic Wykeham at New College. He was president of the Aristotelian Society from 1951 to 1952 and was knighted in 1970. He is known to be an advocate of humanism and as second president of the British Society of the Humanities.
