Albert Ball, was an English fighter pilot during the First World War. At the time of his death, he was the UK's top flyer, with 44 wins, and remains the fourth highest scorer behind Edward Mannock, James McCudden and George McElroy. Born and raised in Nottingham, Ball joined Sherwood's forestry team when World War I broke out and was promoted to lieutenant in October 1914. He transferred to the Royal Flight Corps the following year and had aviator wings. January 26, 1916. Joined the 13th Squadron of the RFC in France, he carried out reconnaissance missions before being appointed to the 11th Squadron, a fighter unit in May.10, he accumulated numerous exploits in the air, received two exceptional service orders and the Military cross. He was the first person to become an English national hero.
