Atal Bihari Vajpayee
Atal Bihari Vajpayee is an Indian politician who served three terms as Prime Minister of India, first a 13-day term in 1996, then a 13-month term from 1998 to 1999, then is full term from 1999 to 2004. Vajpayee is one of the co-founders and senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata party. He is a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a voluntary Hindu nationalist organization. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to not be a member of the full-term Indian Parliament. He is also noted as a poet and writer. He has been a member of the Indian Parliament for more than five decades, was elected 10 times to Lok Sabha, the lower house, and twice to Rajya Sabha, the upper house. He was a congressman from Lucknow, retired from politics in 2009 due to health issues. He was one of the founding members of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, of which he was president from 1968 to 1972.
