Béla Schick is a Hungarian-American pediatrician. He is the founder of the Schick experiment. Bela Schick was born in Balatonboglár, Hungary and raised in Graz, Austria, where he studied medicine. In 1902 he joined the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Vienna where he remained until 1923. While studying immune problems, he and Clemens von Pirquet first coined the term "allergies" as a clinical entity. The discovery of a diphtheria susceptibility test made him famous around the world. Since 1923, he heads of pediatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Since 1936, he has also been a professor at Columbia University. From 1950 to 1962, Schick headed the pediatrics department at Beth-El Hospital, Brooklyn, NY. His later interests included infant nutrition and infant feeding issues.
