Carol Sutton is an American journalist. She received her journalism degree from the University of Missouri. In 1974, she became the first female editor of a major American newspaper, The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky. She was considered a successful example of women in journalism when Time voted American Women as the Person of the Year in 1975. During his tenure at the newspaper, he received the Penney-Missouri Award in 1971 for Excellence General and in 1976 the Pulitzer Prize for Photography to account for the distinction of the schools of Louisville. She is also believed to have dramatically increased the number of minority journalists on her payroll. Carol Sutton learned of her Kentucky Press Hall of Fame award at the University of Kentucky before her death in 1985 and was very humble and honored to receive it. The family annually hosts a Carol Sutton Memorial Scholarship in her honor, which has grown from our first recipient to eight or twelve worthy individuals.
